Three Lions lose two key players as James and Quansah ruled out of Round of 16 clash

According to foreign media reports, England head coach Thomas Tuchel has officially confirmed that first-choice defender Reece James and Jarell Quansah will both miss the World Cup Round of 16 clash against DR Congo. James is dealing with hamstring tightness, while Quansah picked up an ankle injury during the group stage match against Panama. Both players were absent from the team’s final training session in Kansas City ahead of the fixture.

Regarding their recovery progress, Tuchel remained optimistic, noting that both players are improving as planned, with Quansah’s recovery progressing slightly faster. However, given the intensity of the knockout stage and the demands of the matches ahead, the coaching staff must ensure sufficient squad depth and readiness. Tuchel emphasized his confidence in the current squad, stating that injuries are part of the game and the team will respond collectively, with other players stepping up to take on additional responsibility.

At right-back, Tuchel faces tactical adjustments. Possible options include deploying Djed Spence, or shifting Ezri Konsa to that flank while moving John Stones back into central defense alongside a partner. In midfield, Declan Rice is expected to return to the starting lineup after being rested while managing hamstring discomfort. In attack, Bukayo Saka has been dealing with minor Achilles discomfort but has been confirmed fit to start. Saka himself said he feels good, with the calf swelling caused by a collision rather than a serious injury, and that rotation is fully manageable. Overall, the squad has sufficient depth to cope with personnel changes.
