Les Bleus Crush Sweden to Advance to Round of 16: Mbappe Brace, Olise Provides Two Assists
In the round of 32 match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, France faced Sweden on July 1st at MetLife Stadium. Thanks to two goals from Kylian Mbappé, France secured a comprehensive 3-0 victory, booking their spot in the next round.
France dominated possession from the outset. In the first half, they created several dangerous chances. Mbappé had a one-on-one opportunity that was ruled offside, and later fired a shot against the post from an unmarked position. In the 36th minute, Michael Olise attempted an overhead kick inside the box, but the ball again struck the post. The deadlock was finally broken in first-half stoppage time: Ousmane Dembélé took a short corner and delivered a through ball, Mbappé cut inside past several defenders and curled a shot into the far corner to make it 1-0.
France continued their attacking dominance in the second half. In the 58th minute, Bradley Barcola latched onto a through ball from Olise and slotted home to double the lead. In the 74th minute, Olise delivered a precise cross from the right flank, and Mbappé calmly curled a shot into the net for his second goal of the match, sealing the 3-0 victory.
With the 3-0 win, France advanced to the round of 16, where they will face Paraguay. Sweden, meanwhile, were eliminated in the round of 32.
